WINSTON-SALEM, NC - After opening the season with a second place showing at the JU Invite earlier this month, the Wake Forest men's golf team will return to action this Monday at the Wexford Intercollegiate at Wexford Plantation.
The Deacons are looking for their first team victory since winning the General Hackler Intercollegiate almost a year ago. Head coach Jerry Haas's lineup will be led by senior Brendan Gielow, who is coming off an individual title at the JU Invitational. Gielow birdied two of his final three holes to secure his second collegiate victory.
Gielow will be joined by sophomore Led Bedford who fired the lowest round of the day, a 2-under 70, in the final round of the JU Invite. He is second on the team with a 74.3 stroke average and he has finished in the top-20 in three of his five events.
Freshmen Evan Beck and Charlie Harrison will be in the three and four spots and sophomore Daniel Meggs will round out the lineup in the fifth spot. Despite a disappointing week at the JU Invite, Beck has had a good start to his career and is averaging 74.8 stroke per round through his 12 tournament rounds.
Harrison made the most of his first tournament as a scorer, finishing tied for 15th at the JU Invite. He rebounded after an opening round 80 to post rounds of 75-73 and finished at 12-over par, which was his best finish in relation to par this season.
Meggs will be playing in his first tournament of the spring. He is coming off a fall season where he averaged 75.2 over 12 tournament rounds and carded a pair of team-low 68s.
Wake Forest will be the marquee team in the field that is hosted by Francis Marion at the beautiful Wexford Plantation on Hilton Head Island. The weather forecast for the island on Monday and Tuesday looks favorable as temperatures are expected to be in the low-60s with only a chance of rain on Monday afternoon. The first two rounds will be played on Monday and the final round will be played on Tuesday morning.
