WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Coming off one of the most remarkable seasons in program history, Wake Forest continued its run of success with another solid campaign in 2009-10. The Demon Deacons posted a 20-win season and made their second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Wake Forest finished the year 20-11 overall, turning in the school's 21st 20-win season. The Deacons went 9-7 in the ACC to finish in a tie for fifth in the final standings and post a second-straight winning ACC season.
Along the way, Wake Forest finished with seven wins against RPI Top 50 teams, including non-conference victories over NCAA Tournament teams Gonzaga, Richmond and Xavier.
The Deacons went 5-0 in overtime games, including three OT wins in a span of four games in January. Wake Forest played 13 road games on the year. No team in the six BCS conferences played more road games than Wake Forest.
Individually, sophomore forward Al-Farouq Aminu became the 14th player in school history to earn All-America honors. The ACC's leading rebounder was a second team all-conference pick after posting a league-leading 19 double-doubles. Aminu was the only player in the ACC to average a double-double and one of just five players in the BCS conferences to do so.
Senior Ishmael Smith capped off an illustrious career, finishing his four years as the only player in school history with 1,000 points and 600 assists. Smith ranks second all-time at Wake Forest in assists.
Senior L.D. Williams once again served as the team's best defender and earned ACC All-Defensive honors for the second straight season.
Freshmen C.J. Harris and Ari Stewart both made immediate impacts. Harris was the team's third-leading scorer and was a four-time ACC Rookie of the Week. Harris was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. Stewart was the Deacons' top three-point threat and led all ACC rookies in that category.
The Deacons accomplished all that they did despite losing two players to the 2009 NBA Draft. Wake Forest was one of five teams with multiple first-round draft picks in 2009. Among that group, only Wake Forest and Louisville rebounded to make the NCAA Tournament in 2010 and only the Deacons were able to advance to the second round.
