WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - More than one former Demon Deacon has traded in their black and gold for green and yellow. Linebacker Jonathan Jones and fullback Mike Rinfrette were invited to attend the Green Bay Packers rookie minicamp this weekend on a tryout basis.
The two join linebacker John Russell, who was signed to a free agent contract with the Packers earlier in the week. The three former Deacons will be in camp in Green Bay through Sunday.
Jones turned in a solid senior season after serving in a reserve role his first three years on campus. Jones played behind Butkus Award winner Aaron Curry in 2008 but got his chance to shine a year later. He started eight games and finished sixth on the team with 43 tackles and had three pass breakups in 2009.
The Madisonville, Tenn. native originally came to Wake Forest as a wide receiver but was converted to safety in 2007. A year later, he moved to linebacker and played behind Curry on the strong side.
Rinfrette started each of the past two seasons at fullback for Wake Forest. He also saw action at tight end in 2009. A four-year letterwinner, Rinfrette rushed for five touchdowns in his career including three as a senior last season.
As a junior in 2008, Rinfrette was the only Deacon running back to not be stopped for a loss the entire season.
The Bunn, N.C. native played linebacker as a sophomore in 2007, making 23 tackles, before returning to fullback the following season. He saw action off the bench in 12 games as a freshman on Wake Forest's 2006 ACC title team.
A total of six former Deacons will be in an NFL minicamp this spring. Cornerback Brandon Ghee was drafted in the third round by the Cincinnati Bengals, while offensive lineman Chris DeGeare was taken in the fifth round by the Minnesota Vikings. Quarterback Riley Skinner was invited to the New York Giants' rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.
