WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team announced its 2010 schedule, which includes 13 games against teams that advanced to the 2009 NCAA Tournament and 10 games at Spry Stadium.
"I really wanted to challenge our team with this year's schedule," head coach Tony da Luz said. "We're a young team coming off a big year in 2009. We have to put our team to the test and I think this schedule accomplishes that."
Wake Forest will host West Virginia on August 14 in the team's only exhibition match before the start of the 2010 regular season. The Deacs defeated the Mountaineers 3-0 in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
The Deacs open the regular season on the road, traveling to UNC Wilmington on August 20. The regular season home opener is August 23, against UNC Greensboro. Wake Forest closes the month of August with a road game at East Carolina on the 27th.
Wake Forest then opens a stretch of three straight games against teams from the Southeastern Conference. The Demon Deacons will host LSU and Kentucky in the ACC/SEC Challenge at Spry Stadium the weekend of September 3-5. Wake will face LSU on the 3rd, before meeting Kentucky on the 5th. Fellow Atlantic Coast Conference team Virginia Tech will also participate in the weekend tournament.
The following weekend, the Demon Deacons will travel to Blacksburg, Va., for a tournament hosted by Virginia Tech. Wake Forest will face SEC squad Vanderbilt on September 10th and close the tournament against Villanova on September 12th.
"We always try to challenge ourselves and the SEC, from a regional standpoint, has some really good teams in our region," da Luz said. "Of the four teams we're playing from the SEC, all four have a really good chance to make the NCAA Tournament.
The non-conference portion of the schedule concludes with a road game against High Point on September 17, and a home game against SEC foe South Carolina on September 19. The Deacs and Gamecocks met in the third round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament with Wake Forest claiming a 1-0 win on a last second goal by Bess Harrington.
The ACC slate opens on September 23 with a road contest at Duke. Other conference road games for Wake Forest in 2010 include at Florida State (September 30), at Miami (October 10), at Virginia Tech (October 14) and at Virginia (October 17).
The conference home opener for Wake Forest comes on September 26 against Clemson. The rest of the conference home slate includes NC State (October 7), Maryland (October 21), Boston College (October 24) and 2009 national champion North Carolina (October 31). The Tar Heels defeated Wake Forest 5-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
"It's going to be a really strong year for the league," da Luz continued. "I thought last year was a really difficult year where some teams started to rebound and this year I think some of those teams are going to be even better. I like the way our schedule sets up. We finish the season with three home games. I feel like this team is capable of competing for an ACC regular season championship."
The 2010 ACC Tournament is scheduled for November 3-7 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The quarterfinals take place on November 3rd, with the semifinals scheduled for November 5th and the finals November 7th.
The first four rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be held at campus sites. The tournament begins on November 12th and 14th with the first two rounds. Third round games will take place between November 19-21, with the quarterfinal round slated for November 26-28. The 2010 College Cup will be held December 3rd and 5th at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
