WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest's Cheyenne Woods and Michelle Shin have both been named Golfweek All-Americans for the 2009-10 season. Woods earned third team honors and Shin took home honorable mention accolades.
This is the first All-American honors of both players' career and it brings Wake Forest's total to 14. The Demon Deacons have now had a pair of All-Americans in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school-history. Nannette Hill and Natalie Sheary were each named All-Americans in 2008-09.
Woods had a breakout sophomore season. She finished the year with the lowest single-season scoring average in school history at 73.47, which was nearly three strokes lower than her average as a freshman last season. She also earned NGCA second team All-American honors and was named to the All-ACC Team for the first time in her career.
The Phoenix, Ariz., native posted seven top-20 finishes and led the team with 14 of 30 rounds at par or better. She also topped the team with 74 birdies made and 26.5 of her 30 rounds counted towards the team score.
Woods claimed her first collegiate victory at the Bryan National Collegiate in April after finishing the tournament at a career-best 5-under 211. That total was also tied for the second-lowest 54-hole score in school-history. As a result, she was named Golfweek and Golf World Player of the Week and earned ACC Player of the Month honors for the month of April.
Shin also had a very good freshman campaign. She finished second on the team to Woods in scoring average at 74.23 and became the first freshman to win the ACC Individual crown since four-time All-American Amanda Blumenhurst of Duke won it in 2006.
The Cape Coral, Fla., native played in all 10 events and posted a total of five top-20 finishes. Ten of her 30 rounds were played at par or better including seven of her last nine. Like Woods, Shin won her first collegiate tournament this spring at the ACC Championships when she birdied three of the final four holes to claim a one-shot victory.
The duo was Wake's two most consistent golfers all season, leading the squad to its second-straight ACC Championship. Also this spring, the pair held a share of the 36-hole lead at both the Bryan National and the ACC Championship.
Woods and Shin will be representing Wake Forest later this summer at the first annual Hooters Women's Team Championship presented by the NGCA. The tournament is being played at the at Achasta, By Reynolds in Dahlonega, Ga., on August 3-5.
