WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest football team wrapped-up another good week of practice Saturday evening with a two and a half hour practice at the Doc Martin Practice Complex.
The Deacons donned full pads for the workout that began in a light rain and finished in very pleasant conditions.
"It turned out really good tonight," said head coach Jim Grobe. "It cooled down a little bit for us. We had orientation again for the freshmen this morning and we had some good meetings later in the afternoon. Then after dinner we came down and had another real good practice. I thought it was really physical tonight, maybe a little too physical to be honest with you. I thought we were going to get someone hurt but the kids were having fun going at each other. We got some good work in tonight."
With an off day on Sunday and less than two weeks before the opening game against Presbyterian, the team's focus shifts to solidifying the depth chart.
"We started doing it a little this week but we have to start getting the first two units ready next week," said Grobe. "It doesn't mean we aren't going to work some guys in that are behind those first two teams but for the most part we have to get the ones and twos ready to play. One of the things that hurts us right now is that every third or fourth play, we have a bust. Either the offense plays dead or the defense gives up a big one. We've got to quit making mental mistakes and the only way to do that is to get enough repetitions."
A number of young players have gotten a shot this fall to earn playing time which makes trimming the depth chart a little tougher.
"We'll still probably continue to look at more than two quarterbacks and in some positions, we have maybe one more guy we're going to look at beyond the two deep," Grobe continued. "For the most part though, we just have to cut down our first and second teams and make sure the players that are going to have to play that first game and win for us are getting the lion's share of the repetitions."
The Deacons will rest on Sunday before returning to the field on Monday with a pair practices. The morning session will start at 9:30 am and the evening session will begin at 7:30 pm. One practice is set for both Tuesday and Wednesday and then the Deacs will hold their third and final preseason scrimmage on Thursday at 4:30 pm at BB&T Field.
