WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - With only 10 days remaining until the Wake Forest football team's season opener, the "Countdown to Kickoff" series continues with a look at Wake Forest University's Sports Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame is located on the first floor of Bridger Field House, and is open to the public on football gamedays and business days throughout the year. The Hall of Fame features a metal plaque for all 118 inductees, each detailing that individual's unique accomplishments.
Established in 1970, the Hall of Fame recognizes former student-athletes, coaches, and administrators for their contributions to the university. The inaugural class included former Basketball Coach Murray Greason, late Football star Brian Piccolo, former Football Coach Douglas "Peahead" Walker, and former Director of Athletics Jim Weaver, who later became the first commissioner of the ACC.
In order to be considered for the Hall of Fame, a nominee must have displayed a nationally recognized athletic, coaching, or administrative ability while also being of good character and reputation. Attendance as a student for two years, or five years as a member of the athletic staff, is required. Nominees must also have been out of school for at least 10 years or to be deceased, and not have a stronger prior claim with another university.
Hall of Fame inductees are selected by a committee of athletic administrators, faculty, staff, and esteemed alumni. Every year, one home football weekend is designated as "Hall of Fame Weekend," during which new inductees are announced. During the 2010 season, Hall of Fame Weekend will take place in conjunction with the Clemson football game on November 20.
Wake Forest opens the 2010 football season on Thursday, September 2 vs. Presbyterian at 6:30 p.m. To purchase tickets, click here or call 336-758-DEAC (3322).
