WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest started its final week of preseason camp with a single practice on Monday. The Demon Deacons were scheduled for both a morning and an evening practice but head coach Jim Grobe gave the team the evening off.
Monday morning's practice encompassed almost every aspect of the game including special teams. During kickoff coverage practice, assistant coach Steve Russ even went so far as to wear a yellow pinney and race down the field with the kick coverage team.
The kicking game was not up to snuff in Grobe's book on Monday.
"We're just not very consistent right now," said Grobe. "Some days we look great and you think `we'll have a pretty good kicking game.' Other days, it's not there. We just need to be consistent on a day-to-day basis. Because on Saturday, you're one bad play away from not feeling real good about the outcome."
Quarterback Ted Stachitas continues to practice with the first team but several other quarterbacks remain in the mix for the starting role.
"The thing that you notice though is we're still giving reps to everybody,'' said Grobe. "You've got to be careful because not only with the other positions, but quarterback especially, you've got to have that `what-if?' plan. The thing that we learned from Riley (Skinner) is we thought Brett Hodges was the guy and then Brett got dinged in the last scrimmage and when Riley got his chance, nobody could beat him out. So we think it's Ted right now, but Ted knows there might be two, three or four in that mix. We'll keep working guys. At some point we might start cutting some reps, but right now we're kind of balancing it out.
"I would say certainly by the weekend we'll have to have our guy ready to go, and it would have to change from what it is right now," continued Grobe. "Somebody would just really have to make a real move, either from the top down or the bottom up. It's pretty solid right now. We'll see how it goes and keep working. Certainly by the weekend we'll have an order. Maybe it'll be the same as it is right now. I don't know."
Wake Forest is scheduled to practice at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex.
