WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After completing the first day of classes, the Wake Forest football team continued to prepare for the season opener against Presbyterian with a 2-hour practice on Wednesday afternoon at the Doc Martin Football Practice Complex.
The Demon Deacons wore shells for the practice, which was held under partly sunny skies and temperatures near 80 degrees.
"It was a good day," head coach Jim Grobe said. "I thought the defense probably had the upper hand. Yesterday, the offense did some good things. Today, it looked like we had more good things on defense. That's kind of the way it is in camp. Overall, I'm pleased with where we are."
One area Grobe was pleased with during Wednesday's practice was the play of the Demon Deacon kickers.
"I thought we got some good work done in the kicking game today," Grobe said. "The kicking game seemed to be a little improved today and I hope that continues."
With the regular season opener against Presbyterian just eight days away, Grobe says that most of the work in practice is going to those at the top of the depth chart.
"We're getting mostly work with the ones and twos right now," Grobe said. "It's discouraging for some of the guys that are on the third and fourth units, but it's time for us to start getting ready to play a football game."
Wake Forest will hold its third and final intrasquad preseason scrimmage at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at BB&T Field.
"We're going to try to continue to work a lot on our kicking game tomorrow," Grobe said. "We'll do a little bit of scrimmaging. I think we're pretty much where we need to be right now. We don't need to have a real long scrimmage to figure out who the players are. I think we have a pretty good idea right now. What we really need is to play another team. We could have someone come out of the shadows and do something tomorrow, which would be good, and we could have someone step down a little bit."
Fans planning to attend Thursday's scrimmage are encouraged to sit only on the East side of the stands at BB&T Field. Fans should also park in Gold or Red Lots and use Gate 3 to enter the stadium.
