WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 10 Wake Forest women's soccer team will look to rebound from its first loss of the season when it travels to Greenville, N.C. to take on East Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m. at the ECU Olympic Sports Complex.
The Demon Deacons' record stands at 1-1-0 after they fell to UNC Greensboro 2-1 on Monday at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest opened the season on August 20 with a 4-0 road win over UNC Wilmington.
Freshman forward Rachel Nuzzolese has been outstanding so far for Wake Forest, scoring a goal in each of the first two games and also recording an assist against UNC Wilmington. Nuzzolese leads the team with two goals and five points, and her 15 total shots tie her with Virginia's Meghan Lenczyk for the most among Atlantic Coast Conference Players. Nuzzolese is the first Wake Forest freshman since 1996 to score in each of the first two games of her rookie year.
Fellow freshman forward Katie Stengel has also made an immediate impact at Wake and is second on the team with three points through two games. Stengel notched a goal and an assist against UNC Wilmington.
Jordan Feger and Casey Luckhurst have also scored for the Deacons this year, and Jackie Logue has recorded an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe played the full 90 minutes in each of the first two games of the season, making seven total saves and sporting a 1.00 GAA. Bledsoe earned a shutout against UNC Wilmington in her Wake Forest debut.
East Carolina also brings a 1-1-0 record into the game, having lost at UNC Greensboro 2-0, before defeating Francis Marion 4-1 in its home opener on Sunday. Chrissy Gratz, Bailey Wilcox, Amanda Malkiewicz and Caty Butler all scored goals for the Pirates in their win over the Patriots.
Christiane Cordero played both games in net for ECU, allowing three goals while making four saves.
After playing the Pirates, the Deacons will have a week off before they host the ACC/SEC Challenge next weekend. Wake will play LSU at 7:30 on Sept. 3 and Kentucky at 2:00 on Sept. 5.
