WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Former football standout Larry Hopkins has been selected to represent Wake Forest as one of the Class of 2010 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Legends. Hopkins and the other legends will be honored at the ACC Night of Legends event on Dec. 3 during the Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship weekend in Charlotte, N.C.
Despite playing only two years for Wake Forest in the early 1970s, Hopkins left his mark both on the field and in the record books as one of the most accomplished rushers in Wake Forest history. A bruising fullback, he finished second in the ACC in rushing in 1970, while helping lead the Demon Deacons to their first-ever ACC Championship. Hopkins was even better the following year, leading the conference with 1,228 rushing yards, a school record that still stands today.
Twice named to the All-ACC team, Hopkins is fondly remembered by Wake Forest fans for his late game-winning touchdown against North Carolina in 1970 that kept the Demon Deacons' conference title hopes alive.
In his two years in the old gold and black, Hopkins rushed for more than 100 yards in a game on 10 occasions, including twice rushing for over 200 yards. He totaled 2,212 career rushing yards and ranks eighth among Wake Forest career rushing leaders.
A true student-athlete, Hopkins made the Dean's List in all four of his semesters at Wake Forest. After graduating, Hopkins pursued a career as a physician, completing his residency at Virginia Commonwealth and later joining the Air Force where he earned the rank of major.
Hopkins returned to Winston-Salem, N.C. in 1983 to continue his medical career and remained active in the Wake Forest community, serving on the Board of Trustees. His son, David Hopkins, is a member of the Wake Forest men's tennis team.
Hopkins is joined as an ACC Football Legend by stars such as NC State's Ted Brown, the conference's all-time career rushing leader, three-time All-American Randy Rhino (Georgia Tech) and two-time ACC Player of the Year Steve Fuller (Clemson).
