Weekly Recap:
No. 12 Wake Forest earned its first win of the season on Friday night when the Deacs downed Clemson, 2-1, in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
The Demon Deacons are now 1-1-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in ACC play.
Anthony Arena and Andy Lubahn each scored a goal for Wake Forest in the win over the Tigers. Arena's second half goal was the game winner and his team-leading second of the season. Lubahn gave the Deacs the lead in the first half with his first goal of the season.
Chris Duvall, Sam Redmond and Jared Watts each recorded an assist in the win. Watts provided the helper on Lubahn's goal in the first half, while Duvall and Redmond were credited with assists on Arena's game-winning goal.
Akira Fitzgerald earned his first win of the season in goal, making two saves and allowing a goal in 90 minutes of play. With Wake in front 2-1 late in the second half, Fitzgerald made a diving save to preserve the Wake Forest lead. For the season, Fitzgerald has a 1.55 goals against average, allowing five goals in 290 minutes of action while making 10 saves.
Wake Forest took the lead against Clemson in the 34th minute. Watts played a pass to Lubahn, who scored from 23 yards out on a shot into the upper right corner of the net.
A red card in the 56th minute on Watts forced the Demon Deacons to play a man down for the rest of the contest.
Clemson quickly took advantage of the man advantage, scoring 32 seconds after the red card. Riley Sumpter curled a shot into the right side of the net to tie the game at one.
Wake Forest wasted little time in regaining the lead, scoring 89 seconds after the game-tying goal. A corner from Duvall was flicked on goal by Redmond. Arena was able to get a touch on the ball and send it over the Clemson goalkeeper and into the net to put Wake in front to stay 2-1.
Wake Forest hits the road for the first time this week with a pair of games. The Deacs travel to Charlotte on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. to face the 49ers. On Friday, Wake faces No. 2 Virginia in a rematch of last year's national semifinal. Kickoff in Charlottesville is set for 7 p.m.
