Weekly Recap:
The 14th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team finished the past week with a 1-1-0 record, dropping a midweek decision at Charlotte and rebounding to upset No. 2 Virginia on Saturday night in Charlottesville, Va.
The Demon Deacons are now 2-2-1 on the season and 2-0-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Deacs are currently tied for first in the ACC with North Carolina.
Sophomore Andy Lubahn scored the only goal of the week for the Demon Deacons, but it was a big one as his score proved to be the difference in Wake's win at second-ranked Virginia. The goal for Lubahn was his second of the season and the 12th of his career.
Sophomore Luciano Delbono provided the assist on the goal for Lubahn. The assist for Delbono was the first of his collegiate career.
Redshirt senior Akira Fitzgerald made 10 saves on the week in goal. Fitzgerald tied a season high with seven saves in the win at Virginia, including several diving saves to keep the Deacs in front late in the game. The clean sheet was the first of the season for Fitzgerald and the 23rd of his career.
Wake Forest opened the week with a 2-0 loss at Charlotte. The 49ers scored both of their goals in the first half for the victory. The Demon Deacons attempted 12 shots in the game, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Demon Deacons bounced back in a big way on Saturday night, handing Virginia a 1-0 loss. The win snapped the Cavaliers' unbeaten streak at 20 straight matches and also snapped UVa's 13-match home unbeaten streak. Lubahn scored the only goal of the match in the 64th minute. After receiving a cross from Delbono, Lubahn's shot from 12 yards out found the upper right corner of the net to put the Deacs in front.
Virginia applied a good amount of pressure toward the end of the game, looking for the equalizer. However, Fitzgerald was up to the task each time, making several outstanding saves to keep Wake Forest in front.
Wake Forest is back in action this week with a pair of games. The Deacs host the College of Charleston on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The match against the Cougars will be streamed live on WakeForestSports.com. Wake is back on the road on Saturday, traveling to UNC Greensboro. Kickoff against the Spartans is set for 7 p.m.
