Weekly Recap:
The third-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team opened the 2010 season with an 0-1-1 record this past week. The Demon Deacons tied Seton Hall 2-2 on Friday night in Greensboro and fell 2-0 to No. 1 Akron on Sunday night at Spry Stadium.
Sophomore Anthony Arena and freshman Luca Gimenez led Wake Forest on the week with a goal each. Arena put the Deacs on top with a first half goal against Seton Hall, while Gimenez equalized the match against the Pirates late in the second half, scoring his first collegiate goal. Redshirt sophomore Danny Wenzel assisted on the goal by Gimenez.
Wake opened the season with a 2-2 draw against Seton Hall. Arena put Wake in front with a free kick goal in the 12th minute. Seton Hall responded by scoring the next two goals, as Hayden Morris scored in the 15th minute and Steven Rose put the Pirates in front with a goal in the 40th minute. Gimenez tied the game with a goal in the 87th minute, the first of his Wake Forest career.
Akron scored a goal in each half to defeat Wake Forest in the Deacons' home opener. Darren Mattocks put the Zips in front with a goal in the 15th minute. Darlington Nagbe doubled the Akron lead with his second goal of the season in the 53rd minute. Wake Forest managed just four shots in the game, with none of the attempts on frame.
The match between Akron and Wake Forest drew 4,583 people to Spry Stadium, the fourth-largest crowd in stadium history and the largest crowd to witness a regular season match at Wake Forest.
Wake Forest opens Atlantic Coast Conference play on Friday, September 10, when it hosts Clemson. Game time at Spry Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
