GREENSBORO, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman forward Katie Stengel has been named ACC Women's Soccer Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday.
Stengel had an outstanding weekend for Wake Forest in the ACC/SEC Challenge, scoring the game-winning goals in wins over LSU and Kentucky to help lead the Deacons to a sweep of the tournament.
The Melbourne, Fla. native, who was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week and the ACC/SEC Challenge All-Tournament Team, is tied for second in the ACC with two game-winning goals this season, and ranks second on the team and tied for ninth in the league with three total goals on the year.
Stengel is the first Wake Forest freshman in eight years to garner ACC Women's Soccer Player of the Week honors.
In the Deacons' 3-1 win over LSU Friday, less than two minutes after the Tigers had tied the game at 1-1, Stengel ran onto a through ball from fellow freshman Rachel Nuzzolese and delivered a perfectly executed chip over the Tigers' goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give the Deacons a 2-1 lead.
In Wake's 2-0 victory over Kentucky on Sunday, Stengel scored the Deacons' first goal, collecting the rebound from Jackie Logue's shot off the crossbar and calmly slotting it into the vacant net.
Her efforts this weekend helped the Demon Deacons improve to 4-1 overall on the season. Wake Forest will travel to Blacksburg, Va. this weekend to take part in the Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational, facing Vanderbilt on Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. and Villanova on Sept. 12 at 11:30 a.m.
