WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest will open its 58th season of play in the Atlantic Coast Conference by hosting in-state rival Duke on Saturday afternoon at BB&T Field. The game is set to kickoff at noon and will be televised by Raycom. The game is also available on the Wake Forest ISP Sports Radio Network.
The Demon Deacons are coming off a sound 53-13 defeat of Presbyterian on Thursday, Sept. 2, at BB&T Field. Wake Forest scored its most points in a season opener since 1941, its most points in any game since 1990 and its most points ever in Winston-Salem.
The Deacons used a steady running attack to outlast the Blue Hose. Ten different Deacons rushed the ball a combined 50 times for 415 yards and six rushing touchdowns.
Wake's top three running backs, Josh Adams, Josh Harris and Brandon Pendergrass, each hit paydirt in the win. Harris, making his collegiate debut, rushed six times for 74 yards and two touchdowns.
The Blue Devils also posted a win over an FCS opponent in Week 1, taking down in-state rival Elon, 41-27, last Saturday in Durham. Quarterback Sean Renfree threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns, and the receiving duo of Conner Vernon and Donovan Varner combined for 17 receptions and 152 yards to lead the Blue Devils.
Quickie Notes
- WR Chris Givens and DE Kevin Smith each sat out the Presbyterian game while serving a two-game suspension for violation of team rules. Head coach Jim Grobe, based on the student-athlete's good behavior, has reduced that suspension to one game each. Both Givens and Smith are expected to be in the line-up when Wake hosts Duke on Sept. 11.
- Wake Forest and Duke are accustomed to close games as seven of the last nine games at BB&T Field between to the two teams have been decided by eight points or less.
Next Up
