Some Things In Life Are "Givens"
RS junior Chris Givens had his 22nd consecutive game with a reception, his fourth straight 100-plus yard receiving effort and fifth straight game with a receiving TD.
He ties Wayne Baumgardner (1979) with four-straight 100-yard receiving games.
Givens shot up 11 spots on the all-time list for single-season receiving yardage. He began the game in 17th position with 739 yards and finished with 886, moving past Marshall Williams (2009, 867 yards) into sixth-place all-time.
With six catches and 147 yards, Givens moved into the top-10 in school history with 133 career receptions and eighth all-time with 2,029 career receiving yards.
Givens is also now tied for fourth all-time in school history, along with Desmond Clark (1995-98), with 20 career TD receptions.
Price Keeps TD Streak Alive
Sophomore quarterback Tanner Price threw a touchdown pass for the seventh consecutive game. He is the first WFU quarterback to throw a touchdown pass in seven consecutive games since Brian Kuklick in 1997
Price finished the day 15 of 25 for 215 yards and two touchdowns.
He has now thrown for over 200 yards in all seven games this season.
Seems Like They're All Close With Duke
Five of the last six games between Wake Forest and Duke have been decided by six points or fewer.
This is also the first one-point win for the Deacons since defeating Duke 14-13 in Durham in 2006.
Wake had lost its previous two one-point games.
At a Loss - Nikita Whitlock
Sophomore nose guard Nikita Whitlock recorded a fourth straight game with a tackle for loss after sacking Duke's Sean Renfree in the first quarter.
He added a second and third TFL in the third quarter to give him 20 for his career and eight in his past four games.
Big Play Offense Continues
Wake Forest offense has 11 TDs of 20 or more yards this season, including a 26-yarder from Tanner Price to Chris Givens in the first quarter and a 66-yard strike by the same pair in the fourth quarter.
The 66 yard TD pass was the second-longest play of the season for the Deacs and the third 60-plus yard play of the year.
Newman Keeps His Streak
Junior PK Jimmy Newman nailed a 38-yard field goal to tie his own school record with his 12th make in a row. The field goal also moved him into third place all-time in school history in field goals made with 38. He passes Wilson Hoyle's mark of 37 from 1986-89.
BP Reaches Paydirt
Senior running back Brandon Pendergrass scored on a two-yard touchdown plunge in the second quarter, marking his 11th career touchdown run.
The Deacons are now 9-2 when Pendergrass reaches the endzone.
Pendergrass finished the day with 43 yards on 15 carries.
Don't Throw It On Noel
Freshman corner Merrill "Bud" Noel had a sixth straight game with at least one pass broken up and a fourth with at least three deflections. He finished with three passes deflected to give him 15 for the season. That mark already ties him with Eric King (2003) for third all-time for a single season.
Get-Up-And-Go Deacs
Wake Forest has received the ball and scored first in each of its first seven games this season.
The Deacs have outscored opponents 50-15 in the first quarter this season.
Wilber Making Plays In The Backfield
With two tackles for loss against Duke, senior LB Kyle Wilber moved into 10th all-time in school history with 30.5 TFL in his career.
State Champions?
This is the third time since the ACC expanded in 2004 that Wake Forest will face the three other North Carolina teams in the same season. The Deacs swept all three teams in 2006 and 2007 and have beaten NC State and Duke already this season. Wake travels to Chapel Hill next weekend looking for a third-straight sweep.
Miscellaneous
Wake Forest captains were seniors Michael Hoag and Kyle Wilber
Duke won the toss and elected to defer to the second half.
Wake Forest did not allow a Duke score in the first quarter. That's the second straight game without allowing first quarter points for the Wake Forest defense. The Deacons have a first quarter scoreless streak of 33:00 going back to the Florida State game on Oct. 8.
Neither team had an incomplete pass in the first quarter. Price was 8-of-8 through the air and Duke's Renfree completed all seven of his pass attempts.
Before a 66-yard fourth quarter TD to Givens, however, Price was 1-of-7 for -2 yards in the second half.
RS Senior WR Danny Dembry did not make a catch for the first time this season. Terence Davis extended his streak to seven straight games with a reception.
Kenny Okoro sealed the win with his first interception of the season and sixth of his career. It was the first turnover forced by the Wake defense since 4:31 remained in the Florida State win on Oct. 8.
A.J. Marshall made his first start of the season and finished the game with a career-high 10 tackles.
Linebackers Joey Ehrmann and Justin Jackson also tied career highs with seven tackles in the game.
