ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team closed out the fall portion of its schedule on Tuesday by finishing 12th at the U.S. Collegiate Championship at the Golf Club of Georgia. The Deacons carded a final round 297 and finished at 24-over par.
Individually, junior Evan Beck led Wake as he finished tied for 31st at 4-over par. Beck made a total of four birdies in the round and had seven birdies and an eagle on the week.
Senior Lee Bedford also made four birdies in his round on Tuesday and finished with an even-par 72. He birdied the first two holes right out of the gate but hit a rough patch midway through the round and would fall to 1-over par. He then closed the tournament with a birdie at the par-5 18th and would finish tied for 41st at 6-over par.
Just like on Monday, junior Charlie Harrison opened his day with a birdie at No. 1 but had an up-and-down ride the rest of the front nine and would go out in 3-over 39. He righted the ship and played the final nine in just 1-over par to post a closing 76. Harrison was 8-over par for the 54 holes and finished in a tie for 49th.
Sophomore Thomas Birdsey made a couple of pars to start his round on Tuesday but then found trouble at the par-3 third. He made a triple-bogey six and would end-up finishing the front nine at 6-over 42. But the Kansas State transfer rebounded with a birdie at No. 11 and another at No. 18 to finish with a 4-over 76. For the week, Birdsey was 10-over par and finished tied for 59th.
Senior Justin Bryant also found trouble at No. 3, making a seven but he too bounced-back well, making four birdies and playing the final 15 holes at even-par. He finished with a final round 76.
Defending champion Georgia Tech looked to have a second-straight title in hand but a disastrous finish allowed UCLA to slip in and take the team title. The Bruins shot a 5-under 283 on Tuesday, which was the lowest final round, and finished the event at 12-under par. Washington and Auburn were tied for second at 9-under par.
Individually, Auburn's Dominic Bozzelli and Johannes Veerman of Texas A&M shared medalist honors at 6-udner par. The duo was two shots clear of five different players.
The Deacon quartet that was playing at the O'Briant-Jensen Classic in Greensboro, N.C., this week also finished-up on Tuesday. Sophomore John Varol shot rounds of 72-76 to finish tied for ninth. Freshman Brandon Ng and sophomore Beau Cutts each shot a 79 on Tuesday while senior Franklin Dolan rebounded with a solid 77.
Wake Forest has finished the fall portion of its schedule and will return to action as a team at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on Feb. 20-21. Bedford and Beck will be playing as individuals at the 2011 Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic in El Paso, Texas on Nov. 21-22.
