WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest will look for a second-straight Tobacco Road victory on Saturday afternoon when the Demon Deacons travel to Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU and can also be heard on the Wake Forest Sports Network from IMG College.
The Deacons will also be looking for a season-sweep of its Big Four rivals on Saturday. Wake Forest defeated NC State last month and the held on for a 24-23 victory at Duke last weekend.
Wake Forest (5-2, 4-1 ACC) raced out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter against Duke and looked to be in control of the game. But the Blue Devil defense stepped-up in the second half and held the Deacs without a first down for three-straight possessions. Trailing 23-17 midway through the fourth quarter, sophomore quarterback Tanner Price hooked-up with junior Chris Givens for a 66-yard touchdown, giving Wake a 24-23 lead. The Deacon defense then shutdown the Blue Devils the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
Givens finished the day with six catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Price was 15 of 25 for 215 yards and two TD passes.
Defensively, sophomore A.J. Marshall made his first start of the season and recorded a career-high 10 tackles. Senior Cyhl Quarles also made 10 stops on the day while freshman cornerback Merrill Noel had seven tackles and three pass breakups.
North Carolina (5-3, 1-3 ACC) is coming off a pair of tough losses. The Tar Heels fell at home to Miami on Oct. 15 and then ran into a hot Clemson team in Death Valley last weekend, falling 59-38.
Quickie Notes
- Wake Forest is looking to sweep all three of its in-state foes for the third-straight time. The Deacons defeated NC State, Duke and North Carolina in 2006 and again in 2007. This season is the first time since 2007 that Wake has played all three teams in the same season.
- This will be the first meeting between Wake and North Carolina since 2007. Prior to the series hiatus, the Deacons and Tar Heels met all but one year (1943) since 1919.
Next Up...
Wake Forest returns home next weekend to host Notre Dame on Nov. 5. That will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron. The Deacons will then travel to Clemson on Nov. 12 for a pivotal ACC Atlantic Division showdown.
