WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest returns from a two-week road trip to host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in one of the biggest games in the history of BB&T Field. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on ABC/ESPN and can also be heard on the Wake Forest Sports Network from IMG College.
The Demon Deacons (5-3, 4-2 ACC) are coming off a 49-24 loss at in-state rival North Carolina last weekend in Chapel Hill.
Wake Forest committed an uncharacteristic five turnovers, including three interceptions by standout quarterback Tanner Price, in the loss. UNC took advantage of the miscues, converting four of the turnovers into touchdowns.
Tailback Brandon Pendergrass ran for 99 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Deacs. Fullback Tommy Bohanon scored on a late touchdown run, the first rushing TD of his career.
Jimmy Newman booted a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter to set a new school record with 13 consecutive made field goals.
Standout wide receiver Chris Givens was held in check for the most part. Givens, who came into the day leading the ACC in receiving, finished with six catches for 42 yards.
Notre Dame (5-3) is coming off a 56-14 drubbing of Navy last Saturday in South Bend. The Fighting Irish rushed for seven touchdowns, including three by Jonas Gray and two by Cierre Wood to cruise past the Midshipmen.
Quickie Note
- Notre Dame will be playing in its smallest venue since 1945. Wake Forest's BB&T Field, with a listed seating capacity of 31,500, is the smallest stadium the Irish have played in since traveling to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in 1945 and playing in front of a capacity crowd of 23,000.
- If Wake Forest were to equal its all-time record crowd of 37,623 set against North Carolina in 2004, it would still mark the smallest crowd to witness a Notre Dame game since the Irish played in front of 36,700 at the Air Force Academy in 1981.
Next Up...
The Deacons will head back on the road next Saturday when they travel to Clemson, S.C. for a key matchup with the Tigers. With a win in Death Valley and another the following week when they return to BB&T Field to host Maryland, the Deacons will claim their first Atlantic Division title since 2006.
