WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman Katie Stengel has been called up to the U.S. U-20 Women's National Soccer Team for its trip to La Manga, Spain to participate in the Ten Nations Tournament.
During the trip, which will last from Feb. 28-March 9, the team will play friendly matches against Sweden (March 4), England (March 6) and Norway (March 8) under the direction of head coach April Heinrichs.
The tournament marks Stengel's first international trip with the U-20 National Team after she was selected to train with the squad at camps in January and earlier in February. However, it will not be her first trip to La Manga, as she traveled with the U-18 National Team to a tournament in the Spanish city in February of 2010 with Wake Forest teammates Rachel Nuzzolese and Aubrey Bledsoe, starting all three of the team's games.
The forward from Melbourne, Fla. is coming off of one of the best seasons in Wake Forest history, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference with 16 goals and 37 points, and breaking the school records in both categories in the process. She received numerous honors and awards, including ACC Freshman of the Year, All-ACC First Team, TopDrawerSoccer National Rookie of the Year and NSCAA Second-Team All-America.
