WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team dropped its spring opener 2-0 to the Carolina Railhawks at Spry Stadium Friday night.
The Railhawks, who play in the NASL, scored two second-half goals to earn the win.
The bright spot for Wake Forest was goalkeeper Doug Ryan, who entered the game in the 74th minute and made five quality saves without allowing a goal. Ryan also saved two penalty kicks in the practice penalty shootout that followed the game.
The two sides played a scoreless first half, though both teams had scoring chances.
Wake Forest's best opportunity of the opening period came in the 38th minute when Andy Lubahn's pass found Kyle Emerson in the box with the keeper caught out of the net, but his shot was blocked by a defender, preserving the 0-0 scoreline.
Michael Lisch made four saves in net for the Demon Deacons in the first half to keep the Railhawks off the board.
Carolina's first goal came in the 52nd minute when a header off of a cross from the right found the back of the net. The Railhawks' second tally came was the product of a counterattack in the 73rd minute.
Lubahn had a chance to score for the Deacons in the 73rd minute off of a counterattack led by Luca Gimenez, but his shot went wide. Gimenez had an opportunity of his own in the 89th minute as he made a long run down the right side, but his low shot was stopped by the goalkeeper.
Wake Forest will play its next spring game on March 19 against the University of Windsor (Canada) at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
