WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Andy Lubahn and Anthony Arena found the back of the net for Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons put together their most complete effort of the spring, shutting out Duke 2-0 at Spry Stadium Friday.
The Deacs controlled play from the outset, having a number of chances before Lubahn tallied in the 38th minute. The sophomore striker has now scored in three consecutive spring games. Arena scored an insurance goal on a header off a corner kick in the 82nd minute to leave the final score 2-0.
Michael Lisch played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Demon Deacons to earn the shutout.
Lubahn had a good chance to open the scoring in the 29th minute when he came free in the penalty area but his two shots from in close were saved by the Blue Devil keeper.
In the 36th minute, Luca Gimenez took off on a breakaway down the left side and cracked a shot that hit the inside of the right post and came back out, leaving the game scoreless.
Lubahn struck in the 38th minute, collecting a through ball and slotting it past the goalkeeper to give the Demon Deacons a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Duke's best chance came in the 68th minute when Lisch made a point-blank save on a powerful header to preserve the clean sheet.
Wake's second goal came in the 82nd minute as Teddy Mullin served a corner kick right to Arena, who crisply headed it into the goal.
The Demon Deacons will return to action on April 9 with their only road trip of the spring as they travel to take on West Virginia.
