WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - As Wake Forest's spring football season winds down towards Saturday's spring game, head coach Jim Grobe find himself still tinkering with the Demon Deacon offense.
"We're still adding some stuff," said Grobe on Tuesday as the Deacons practiced in a light mist. "We purposely started spring practice being as simple as possible and we've added bits and pieces as we've gone along. One of our problems offensively right now is that we still have some things we want to look at but we're not dictating to the defense what they should run or show us. Sometimes we get into practice and we've installed some new things on offense but it doesn't really fit that well with what we're seeing from the defense. We've had to get together and script, especially the early team parts of practice. We're still installing a little bit but I'm really pleased with where we are right now. I think our fundamentals have gotten better. I don't think there's any question are players are having fun."
Wake Forest's spring game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 16 at BB&T Field. Grobe does not expect any surprises during the spring's final controlled scrimmage.
"If you've been to any of our scrimmages, (we'll be doing) the same thing," said Grobe. "I've talked to the coaches a little bit. Some teams try and play a game where the defense has certain ways to get points and the offense has certain ways to get points. But our guys have been pretty competitive without having to make anything up. They've been competing against each other pretty good. We've worked on our kicking game some in scrimmages at the stadium. Alex Wulfeck has been punting and has gotten quite a bit better this spring. So I'd like to give him have an opportunity to finish the spring with a couple of punts."
