WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Wake Forest women's soccer program wrapped up the spring exhibition season on Saturday against the University of Georgia with a 2-0 loss at Spry Stadium.
Wake Forest put forth a solid effort in the match, but was unable to finish a number of chances. Katie Stengel put a first-half breakaway wide and had another chance smothered before she could get a shot off.
The second half continued the same way with Alisha Woodson heading over the bar from a few yards away and then missing a rebound off a Stengel shot that had been cleared off the goal line. Georgia caught the Deacs on two counter attacks, the second coming after Wake Forest changed to a 3-4-3 to try and find an equalizer.
The spring season, which also included matches against the Wake Forest men's club team, High Point, North Carolina and Duke, marked the end of a successful 2010-11 campaign.
"The spring season is an important time for development and to give players who have not had seen much playing time the opportunity to get some match experience ," head coach Tony da Luz said. "While we've set a standard to get results whenever we're on the field, you have to balance that out with giving both the players and coaches a honest chance to see where every person in the program is at."
"We did that and the results and numbers tell us a lot," da Luz continued. "We'll now sit down and put together the best-possible roster of players that will continue allow us to maintain the strength of our program and continue to challenge for championships."
The Demon Deacons earned their first-ever ACC Championship in the fall and made their 15th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, reaching the second round.
Forward Katie Stengel put together a fantastic freshman season, earning ACC and National Rookie of the Year Honors after setting new Wake Forest single-season records with 16 goals and 37 points.
Aubrey Bledsoe was named ACC Tournament MVP after stopping three penalty kicks in the championship shootout, while Stengel, Jackie McSally and Marisa Park also made the All-Tournament team.
Senior Bianca D'Agostino was drafted by Philadelphia of the WPS and eventually signed a contract with the Atlanta Beat, where she is currently playing.
