WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest continued its spring workouts on Tuesday, as the Demon Deacons held practice under clear skies, but amidst blustery conditions, at the Doc Martin Practice Complex on campus.
As Wake Forest's spring practice period has passed the midway point, the Deacons have been seeing improvement from the offense as evidenced by the three touchdowns the team scored in last Saturday's intrasquad scrimmage.
One of the Deacons' primary play-makers on offense is junior wide receiver Chris Givens, who has caught 12 touchdown passes over the past two seasons. Givens, who had three catches for 42 yards in Saturday's scrimmage, is pleased with how the offense has been coming together lately.
"We've got some players on offense who have been making plays," said Givens. "We're having fun out there which is something we didn't have too much of last year. The fact that we're having fun in practice just raises the intensity and makes everyone a little more focused and ready to go every day.
"But we have to not just play like that on Saturdays but play like that in practice. That way when we get to Saturdays, it's just like practice where you go out there and make plays."
So far, Givens likes what he sees out of this spring's group of wide receivers but still sees room for improvement.
"We have a lot of talent," said Givens. "But we need to work to become more mentally tough and pay a little more attention to detail. We need to really buy in to what we're doing on offense--be better blockers and just do everything that needs to be done so we can be the best in the ACC next year."
Sophomore quarterback Tanner Price echoed Givens' assessment that the Deacons need to keep improving as the spring goes along.
"I think we're getting better each day," said Price. "We still have a lot of room for improvement, but I feel pretty good about the way the team looks. There are always a few mental busts. Personally, I had a few throws [on Saturday] that I missed that I can't have. I need to keep working on my accuracy and just getting the playbook down mentally."
The Deacons will hold the third of their four scheduled scrimmages on Saturday at 10 a.m. at BB&T Field. Wake Forest's annual spring scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m. at BB&T Field. All spring scrimmages and workouts are free and open to the public.
