WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Tommy Bohanon and Brandon Pendergrass each rushed for touchdowns, and Zachary Allen and Riley Haynes both had interceptions to lead Wake Forest in its third scrimmage of the spring on Saturday morning at BB&T Field.
Pendergrass put the Demon Deacon offense on the board in the team's fifth series of the day. Quarterback Tanner Price led the first-team offense 65 yards on nine plays. Price had two big pass completions to set up the score. He hit Danny Dembry for 24 yards on fourth-and-three, which put the ball at the defense's 34-yard line.
Price then converted a third-and-12 with a 20-yard completion to tight end Cameron Ford, taking the ball to the 15-yard line. Two plays later, Pendergrass ran in untouched on the right side for the touchdown.
Allen made sure the next series belonged to the defense. The redshirt freshman sacked Brendan Cross on first down and then picked off the quarterback on a screen pass to the left. Allen took the ball to the 15-yard line before being brought down.
The offense went back to work on the ensuing series, as quarterback Ted Stachitas engineered a scoring drive of 10 plays covering 65 yards and ending in a one-yard touchdown run from Bohanon.
Running back Josh Harris rushed five times for 37 yards to fuel the drive. It was the legs of Stachitas, though, that would set up Bohanon's touchdown.
Facing a third-and-four at the defense's 20-yard line, Stachitas dropped back to pass before finding no one open. He pulled down the ball and ran right for 19 yards before being stopped just short of the goal line. Bohanon plunged in on the next play for the touchdown.
The Wake Forest offense almost scored on the 12th and final series of the day before stalling at the defense's one-yard line. Cross engineered the drive behind the running of redshirt freshmen Nick Knott and Khiry Sutton.
While the two running backs combined for 32 yards on six carries during the drive, it was Cross' 31-yard completion to wide receiver Quan Rucker on third-and-seven that kept the drive going.
Sutton rushed three times for 17 yards, while Knott ran three times for 15 yards on the drive. On his final rush, Knott took the ball to the defense's one-yard line before tripping and losing a shoe just short of the goal line.
Facing a first-and-goal at the one, the Deacon defense stood strong. The front seven stuffed fullback Jordan Garside on first down and then Sutton on second for no gain. On third down, cornerback Merrill Noel raced in to stop Sutton for a three-yard loss.
Haynes thwarted a promising drive on the offense's fourth series of the day. After quarterback Patrick Thompson had led the offense into the defense's territory, Haynes leapt to pick off Thompson at the 26-yard line.
Linebacker Scott Betros led the team with five tackles, including one for loss. Allen turned in possibly the most productive day for the team with four tackles (three solo), a sack, an interception and a pass breakup.
Cyhl Quarles, Tristan Dorty, Kevin Johnson and Kris Redding totaled four tackles apiece. Dorty and Kyle Wilber combined on a sack.
Cornerback Kenny Okoro led the secondary with three pass breakups, including a near interception on a low-thrown ball from Stachitas.
On the offensive side, Harris led all rushers with 43 yards on seven carries. Sutton carried 10 times for 39 yards, and Knott rushed seven times for 27 yards. Brandon Pendergrass had 18 yards on four carries.
Wide receiver Michael Campanaro was the only Deacon with multiple catches, as he finished with four grabs for 11 yards. Rucker hauled in the longest catch of the day with his 31-yarder from Cross.
Price led the quarterbacks, completing six of 12 passes for 62 yards. Cross completed two of six for 30 yards.
The Deacons will wrap up their spring workouts next week. Wake Forest will hold afternoon practices on Tuesday and Thursday on campus before playing its annual spring game on Saturday, April 16. The spring game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at BB&T Field. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public.
