CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Wake Forest women's soccer player Katie Stengel notched an assist to help the United States U-20 National Team defeat Japan 2-1 in a friendly match earlier this week at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
Stengel started the match and helped create the first goal for the U.S. in the fourth minute, winning the ball at the top of the penalty area and sliding a pass to Kelly Cobb, who put it past the goalkeeper from 22 yards. Japan tied the game in the 13th minute before a Morgan Brian strike in the 22nd minute gave the U.S. the lead for good.
Stengel has been a part of every one of the U-20 team's training camps this year as it prepares for the 2012 U-20 World Cup in Uzbekistan.
A rising sophomore forward, Stengel set new Wake Forest single-season records in her freshman season in 2010, scoring 16 goals and 37 points. She was named ACC Freshman of the Year and was a first-team All-ACC and second-team All-America selection.
