Former Football Star Ed Royston Passes

Ed Royston, a former Wake Forest football player who went on to play with the New York Giants, died on July 16, 2011.
Royston was the captain of the 1947 Demon Deacon team and earned first team All-Southern Conference honors from the Associated Press. He was also named to Army's All-Opponent team in 1945 and earned honorable mention on several All-America teams. Royston was also named to the All-Big Four team and earned All-State honors.

ROYSTON Edwin F., 87 of Seaside Park, NJ died on Saturday July 16, 2011 at home. Born in Baltimore, Maryland he lived in Bergenfield and summered in Seaside Park until he became a permanent resident in 2001. Mr. Royston served in US Navy during WWII. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics from Wake Forest University in North Carolina. He was a maritime industry Sales Representative for Alabama Dry Dock and Ship Building Company in Hoboken, NJ for 40 years. Ed played football at Wake Forest and was named all Southern Guard in 1947 and then played professionally for the New York Giants. He was an offensive and defensive guard and played on special teams. He was a member of the Union Church of Seaside Park. Predeceased by his wife of 60 years Virginia (Garner). Surviving is his son and daughter in-law Craig and Deborah of Bergenfield, NJ, two daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Peter Nielsen of Jupiter, Fl and Jane and Ted Zazopoulos of West Milford, NJ, his sister Loretta Sparks of Maryland, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service 2 PM Saturday July 23, 2011 at the Union Church of Seaside Park 47 4th Ave, Seaside Park, NJ. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Union Church of Seaside Park. The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals 809 Central Ave. Seaside Park, NJ is in charge of the arrangements.
