RICHMOND, Va. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team got goals from Katie Stengel and Jessica Mandarich to earn a 2-0 road win over VCU in its final exhibition match of the preseason.
The Demon Deacons drew first blood in the 60th minute when a through ball from Marisa Park put Stengel on a breakaway and she finished past VCU keeper Kristen Carden for her third goal of the preseason. Mandarich, a freshman, added an insurance goal in the 67th minute, taking a feed from Jackie McSally and roofing a shot into the top-right corner.
Aubrey Bledsoe played the full ninety minutes in goal, making eight saves to record her second shutout of the preseason. Carden made five saves in a losing effort. Wake Forest held a narrow 11-10 advantage in shots in the contest.
Head coach Tony da Luz used the final exhibition match as an opportunity to see a number of different players in a competitive environment as the Demon Deacons played 22 different players in the contest.
The Deacs will embark on their quest to defend their ACC championship next weekend when they open the 2011 regular season at Auburn on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. Central Time (8 p.m. Eastern Time). Wake will then travel to Orlando, Fla. for a game against UCF on Aug. 21 at 6 p.m.
