WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - One day before the Wake Forest football team's second scrimmage of the season, the Demon Deacons practiced without pads during their lone session of the day on Thursday morning at the Doc Martin Football Complex.
Without the physicality that comes with a practice in full pads, head coach Jim Grobe wanted the players to get several repetitions and focus on the mental aspect of the game.
"We wanted to have a mental practice today instead of a real physical practice. We've been running into each other a lot here lately, so we wanted to get the pads off their shoulders a little bit," said Grobe.
Heading into tomorrow's scrimmage - scheduled for 9:30 at BB&T Field - Grobe is looking for the defense to come out with more energy, and he would like to see several more offensive players take the field.
"Defensively, we just need to see those guys play with a little more energy than they did last week," said Grobe. "Offensively, we want to get some guys in who weren't able to play in the first scrimmage on Monday. We still want to cut down on the mistakes that we are making. We are still making some mistakes, but we aren't making as many as we did. It would be nice to have fewer penalties. Offensively, we want to protect a little better and play fundamental football."
As of today, Wake Forest is now just two weeks away from its season opener at Syracuse. The Demon Deacons will be traveling to Syracuse to play on Thursday, September 1, at 8 p.m.
"We've worked really hard, and we've pushed the guys pretty good. They have responded well. We haven't really had a bad practice, and that's a good thing. We are probably about where we need to be," said Grobe. "We certainly wouldn't want to line up and play Syracuse tomorrow, but as far as our planning, we are where we need to be. I'm perfectly happy with where we are right now."
