WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team's quest to repeat as ACC champions began Saturday as the team gathered for the first day of 2011 preseason camp.
The Demon Deacons started the day with fitness testing, before head coach Tony da Luz put them through a pair of training sessions at the Spry Stadium practice fields.
After a warmup and some ball drills, the team split up into teams of four for a four-on-four tournament which was won by the squad of Jackie McSally, Lee Page, Alisha Woodson and Kelsey Zalimeni, with Aubrey Bledsoe playing in goal.
The Deacons will have two weeks of preseason training before they open the 2011 season on the road at Auburn on August 19. Wake Forest has two exhibition matches on the preseason schedule, the first against Radford on Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium and the second at VCU on August 14.
Eight starters return from last year's squad which won the school's first ACC women's soccer championship, including Katie Stengel, who set new Wake Forest records with 16 goals and 37 points, and Aubrey Bledsoe, who was named ACC Tournament MVP last year. The Deacons also have Ally Berry, Rachel Nuzzolese and Kelsey Zalimeni returning from knee injuries that limited them last season.
