WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Andy Lubahn supplied the game-winning goal in the 77th minute on a rapid breakaway to give the Wake Forest men's soccer team a second straight 2-1 victory, this time against the Cleveland State Vikings on Wednesday, September 14 at Spry Stadium.
In the Demon Deacons first-ever match against CSU, Wake Forest controlled the pace for a majority of the first half, firing 16 shots (seven on frame) and harassing CSU's Brad Stuver into action six times. The 2010 Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year made a number of athletic saves, but the seventh shot he faced found the back of the net.
With just 31 seconds left on the clock, junior midfielder Ben Newnam received a lofty cross from freshman Teddy Mullin and snuck it past Stuver toward the far post. The sequence featured Newnam's second career score and Mullin's second career assist.
The Vikings refused to go away easily after the half and finally found an equalizer in the 76th minute off a loose ball in the penalty box, which sophomore forward Admir Suljevic controlled and pounded past junior keeper Michael Lisch.
A number of changes were made to the Wake Forest lineup immediately after the score, including the return of Lubahn from the bench to his customary forward position.
52 seconds later, the shuffling paid off as Lubahn received a pass from sophomore Luca Gimenez approximately 35-yards out and tore toward the goal. The forward sprinted inside the box and unleashed a crossing shot off the inside of his left boot to the near post for the game-winner - and his first goal of the 2011 season.
CSU would get off two more shots before the buzzer, but neither were threatening as WFU improved to 2-2-1 on the season with a second consecutive win. Lisch made three saves on the night for his first career win against a non-conference opponent.
In a swift turnaround, the Deacs will wrap up their season-opening six game homestretch with a primetime matchup against No. 8 North Carolina on Friday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
Noteworthy
• Sophomore Kovi Konowiecki made his first career appearance for the Deacs, entering the match in the 57th minute and supplying 19 minutes in the midfield.
• Wake Forest men's soccer improves to 3-0 all-time against the Horizon League. The match was the Deacs' first against a Horizon foe since 1995 (UW-Milwaukee).
• Freshman midfielder Teddy Mullin has now recorded assists in back-to-back matches for the Deacs.
• The Deacs improved to 4-3 all-time on September 14.
• Since 2003, Wake Forest improved to 112-7-5 when scoring the first goal of a match.
