Post-game Quotes
September 17, 2011 - BB&T Field
Wake Forest 48, Gardner-Webb 5

Wake Forest Head Coach Jim Grobe<>

On the early pressure from Gardner-Webb...
"I think we had a really strong challenge early, but I think our kids adjusted well and our coaches did a good job getting the kids settled down. We drew up some plays on the sidelines and got them where they needed to be. I thought we didn't play very well early, but as the game went on we started to pick it up."

On the blocked punt by Chris Givens...
"That was huge for us. It's one of the most effective things in the game when you're able to block a punt. I don't think there's any momentum changer that's bigger than a blocked punt and I thought that was a great effort on his part."

On the defensive play in the game...
"I thought we were really disorganized early in the game. We came in with a plan against certain sets to use our base defense and certain sets to use our nickel coverage. We were not doing a very smooth job of getting in and out of those fronts and coverages, but we settled down."

On Gardner-Webb's pass rush...
"They brought the house from a lot of different places. We were getting quite a bit of pressure, and in some situations the pressure was coming from places where we did not expect it to come from. There were some times where they just beat us up front. We missed a couple of blocks up front, and that's to their credit. We've got to get our offensive linemen protecting better, but quite frankly a few times they brought more than we could pick up. Tanner took a couple of shots that I don't like him taking, but he played very well in general."

On Jimmy Newman...
"Jimmy did a nice job except for the one shank where he kicked it out of bounds. I thought his kickoffs were good tonight. Kicking at the scoreboard we had a little bit of a breeze, but he still put a bunch of them in the end zone for touchbacks. Jimmy has stayed with any bad snaps that we've had. A lot of kickers panic when it's not a good snap, but he got that first field goal through even with a snap like that. He just calmly stayed with it and kicked it through. I'm happy with him right now and I feel like he's doing some very good things."

Junior Wide Receiver Chris Givens

On how it felt to be able to rest in the second half...
"That's probably the hardest thing for me to do. I just don't like being on the sidelines. I'm glad that I was on the sidelines for a good reason, and I was happy that everyone else was able to get some reps and get some playing time.

On his blocked punt...
"They just didn't block me. When I came at the ball, I was expecting the end to come out on me or something, but he didn't even come out. I was surprised that I got there, and the block looked pretty bad because it looked like I just ran into the punter. I just got there faster than I expected to and the (punter) was still fumbling around with the (ball). I didn't know what to do, so I just made sure I blocked it."

On where the team stands heading into the off week...
"I feel pretty confident about where we are right now. We're doing some good things on both sides of the ball. We have some mistakes that we can correct that will make our offense even better. We're going to go into this week focusing on (Boston College). Even though we have a bye week, we're going to work hard in the film room. We're going to come together more and more and fix all the little things that are stopping us from being a great offense."

Gardner-Webb Coach Ron Dickerson Jr.

On his thoughts on tonight's game...
"Wake Forest is a really good team and you know we had to come out of our conference and step up and play an ACC team that has been to bowls. I just want to commend my guys. They played hard. Personnel we were out matched. They played hard."

On whether the blocked punt swung the momentum...
"Yeah I would agree. That's kind of how football is. It is a game of great plays. When you step up a division and have to play a great team like Wake Forest, again we can't have any fundamental breakdowns like that. That is where they got their momentum and they just took off with it. We kind of stayed stagnant."

On finding offense outside of James Perry III...
" The last two weeks we were able to run the ball and this week we wanted to go in and be able to throw the ball and run the ball. They played a different defense than what we saw. They had a good defensive line, stunting and doing different stuff. They just played at a different level than us. We don't see this everyday and play against a Wake, the Florida State's and this speed of the game."
