WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team finally made it to the field and was apparently ready to kick off at 9:50 p.m., but an abrupt lightning bolt right before opening kick finally put an end to the notion of playing on Wednesday, September 21 at Stone Stadium.
The Demon Deacons and Gamecocks waited through nearly three hours of lightning stoppage after experiencing heavy rains during the late afternoon, causing flash floods on the campus of the University of South Carolina.
Finally, just short of a 10:00 p.m. cut-off time, starters were announced and the anthem was played before one more rogue bolt shot off in the night. The referee crew decided at that moment to cancel the match.
South Carolina and Wake Forest will potentially re-schedule the match at a later date after reviewing schedules.
