WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest sophomore forward Katie Stengel was one of 20 players called up to the United States Under-20 National Team for its trip to Spain next week to compete in the Four Nations Tournament, U.S. head coach Steve Swanson announced Monday.
At the tournament in La Manga, Spain, the U.S. squad will face Switzerland on Feb. 9, Germany on Feb. 11 and Norway on Feb. 13.
The Americans are preparing for CONCACAF qualifying, which will take place in Panama City, Panama from March 1-11. That tournament will send three teams to the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, which was to be held in Uzbekistan but has since been relocated by FIFA. The new host has not yet been confirmed, but Japan is the front-runner.
Stengel has been a regular with the U-20s over the past year and recently returned from a two-week training camp with the team in California where it posted two victories in friendly matches against Shanghai Women's Football Club (China).
The reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Year and two-time All America selection has already established herself as one of the most accomplished players ever to take the field for Wake Forest. She scored a school-record 19 goals and 46 points in 2011 to help lead the Demon Deacons to their first-ever NCAA College Cup.
