WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - After recording his first-career hat trick on Friday night at Virginia Tech, junior Luca Gimenez has been rewarded by being named ACC Co-Player of the Week for the first time of his career, as announced on Tuesday by the league office.
Gimenez, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, is the first Wake Forest player to receive the award since Andy Lubahn did so on Nov. 1, 2010. Lubahn earned the award for a hat trick as well against Boston College on Oct. 30, as he was the most recent player to do so before Gimenez accomplished the feat on Friday night.
With four goals and two assists on the season, Gimenez is now the team leader in goals scored and total points (10). In addition, his hat trick is just the 26th in Wake Forest history.
The Demon Deacons dominated Virginia Tech on Friday night, defeating the Hokies 4-0. Gimenez scored two goals in the first half and completed his hat trick in just the 56th minute.
Collin Martin assisted on the first goal when he played Gimenez down the left sideline. Gimenez then dribbled by a defender and ripped a shot from outside the 18 near post to put Wake Forest up 1-0 in the eighth minute.
Gimenez then collected a rebound and put the ball home in the 41st minute after Sean Okoli had a shot blocked. His final goal came on a penalty kick. Martin played Michael Gamble into the box where he was pulled down from behind to earn the penalty.
Gimenez shared the weekly award with Boston College senior Charlie Rugg who scored three goals and dished out two assists on the week. The two will face off on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Spry Stadium when Wake Forest hosts the Eagles.
The Demon Deacons will first be in action tonight at 7 p.m. at Davidson.
