ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team carded a final round 299 and finished 12th at the US Collegiate Championship on Sunday at the Golf Club of Georgia.
Individually, senior Evan Beck closed out the weekend with a 74 and finished tied for 20th at 4-over par. Beck made a total of 11 birdies over the 54 holes and notched his third-straight top-20 finish of the season.
The Deacons opened the tournament with a round of 3-over 291 and were tied for second. But a 303 on Saturday and a 299 on Sunday dropped the team into 12th place. Host Georgia Tech closed the gap on defending champion UCLA on Sunday and nipped the Bruins by one shot for the team title.
Junior Thomas Birdsey made a nice eagle on the closing hole on Sunday to post a 2-over 74. Birdsey finished the tournament with rounds of 72-76-74 and was tied for 28th at 6-over par.
Freshman Davis Womble had a solid opening round 71 but followed that with rounds of 75-78 and finished tied for 41st. Senior Charlie Harrison rebounded from an 82 on Saturday with a 74 on Sunday and finished tied for 62nd.
Freshman Grayson Murray rounded out the Deacon scorers with a 77 on Sunday and finished 67th at 17-over par.
Stanford's Patrick Rodgers fired the round of the day, a 5-under 67, to comeback and claim medalist honors at 7-under par. He was four shots better than three players, including first and second round leader Taylor Gooch of Oklahoma State.
This was the Demon Deacons final team event of the fall. They will get back to action on February 18-19 at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate. Wake Forest finished third in the event last spring.
