ELON, N.C. - Elon capitalized on a first-half penalty kick and held on down the stretch to defeat No. 13 Wake Forest 1-0 on Tuesday evening at Rudd Field.
The Demon Deacons are now 9-3-4 on the season, while the Phoenix improve to 11-4-1.
Chris Thomas drew a foul in the box in the 17th minute and converted the penalty kick to give the Phoenix the only goal of the game. The goal was the 20th of the season for Thomas.
The teams were tied with 13 shots apiece, while Wake Forest took six corners compared to five for Elon. Michael Gamble led the Deacs with four shots, and Luciano Delbono, Sean Okoli, Luca Gimenez and Collin Martin each took two shots.
Andrew Harris made his collegiate debut by starting in goal, making two saves and not allowing a goal in the run of play.
Wake Forest created several chances in the final few minutes of the game, but one shot was saved off the back line by the Phoenix defense while another went off the post.
The Demon Deacons will be back in action on Saturday to host South Carolina at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium on Senior Night.
