WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest will look to pick up its second ACC victory on Saturday afternoon when the Demon Deacons travel to College Park to take on the Maryland Terrapins. Kickoff at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium is slated for 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
The Demon Deacons (3-2, 1-2 ACC) are coming off a 34-27 loss to in-state rival Duke last weekend at BB&T Field.
Senior fullback Tommy Bohanon stepped up as an offensive threat for the Deacs by totaling a career-high 41 yards receiving with two touchdowns to lead the offense.
"It definitely excites me to get out of the backfield," said Bohanon. "That's what helps with my new H-back position; I get to line up all over the field. I feel like that helps me be able to get open and give Tanner a window to be able to throw to me a little bit more."
In the first quarter, Price lost his go-to receiver Michael Campanaro when he exited the game in the first quarter with a broken right hand.
"I think everyone knows that we lost a big player," said senior placekicker Jimmy Newman. "It does hurt, but it also gives some of the other guys the opportunity to show off some of their skill sets."
Senior wide receiver Terence Davis stepped up to fill the void and caught a career-high six passes for a career-high 100 yards.
Entering the fourth quarter tied at 20, the momentum shifted in favor of the Blue Devils' defense after forcing Price to fumble and later tipping a pass. In less than nine minutes, Duke tallied two touchdowns. While Bohanon caught a four-yard touchdown pass with 42 seconds left, but the Deacons ran out of time as the onside kick was recovered by Duke to wrap up the contest 34-27.
"It was another typical Wake Forest game in the fourth quarter with a chance to win it but we didn't get it," said Coach Jim Grobe. "We've got to keep practicing hard and coaching hard and try to do a better job as coaches. (We have to) try and demand more out of our players and keep moving forward."
After resting during their bye week last Saturday, the Terrapins (2-2) will open up conference play against the Deacons. In their most recent game on Sept. 22, Maryland fell to No.8 West Virginia 31-21. Freshman quarterback Perry Hills threw for a season-high 305 yards and three touchdowns.
Freshman wide receiver Diggs totaled 201 yards including a team-high 113 receiving yards on three receptions. Diggs was named ACC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after bringing down touchdown catches of 42 and 56 yards against the Mountaineers.
Despite being hampered with injuries early in the season, the Terps' defense ranks eighth nationally in total defense (261.25 ypg) and will aim to shut down the Deacons with their physical playing style.
"I think that everybody is really excited about the game, knowing that we're just going to have to clench our teeth and play as best as we can to win especially against a unit like Maryland's defense," said Newman. "We're all optimistic, and we know that there's no place else to go besides up."
Wake Forest has won four out of the last six meetings over Maryland, including a 31-10 victory last season at BB&T Field.
The Terrapins and Deacons will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday on ESPNU.
