PINEHURST, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team will face SMU in the first Payne Stewart Match Play on Monday at the famed Pinehurst No. 2.
Each school will have eight players compete in two rounds on Monday. The morning round will pit four two-man teams from Wake Forest against four two-man teams from SMU in a best ball format. The afternoon round will consist of eight singles matches.
The eight players representing Wake Forest will be seniors Evan Beck and Charlie Harrison, juniors Beau Cutts, Thomas Birdsey and John Varol and freshman Grayson Murray, Andrew Winters and Davis Womble. The pairings for the day will be announced by the school's head coaches at the pairings dinner on Sunday evening.
This will be the first Payne Stewart Match Play event at Pinehurst. SMU, Payne Stewart's alma mater, and Pinehurst have teamed together to host an annual match play event on the fames Pinehurst No. 2 course, the site of Stewart's US Open victory in 1999.
Each school also has eight boosters who will play in Sunday's practice rounds and in a best-ball format Monday morning. The first round on Monday will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the singles matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
