GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Notre Dame scored two second half goals to upset third-seeded Wake Forest 2-1 on Friday at James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.
The Demon Deacons (14-6-3) had taken the lead just before halftime on a goal by Kristen Meier, but the Fighting Irish (15-5-2) seized momentum in the second half, getting a 59th minute goal from Cari Roccaro and a 70th minute winner from Crystal Thomas to advance to the third round.
Meier's goal came via a nice passing sequence, with Alisha Woodson and Katie Stengel earning assists on the play.
Wake Forest had a good scoring chance early in the eighth minute. Jackie Logue headed Marisa Park's corner kick to the right post, but it was cleared off the line by a Notre Dame defender. The rebound fell to Kim Marshall, who put a shot off of the post.
The Demon Deacons took the lead just before halftime off of a pretty passing sequence. Katie Stengel found Alisha Woodson making run forward from her right back position. Woodson placed a lofted through ball right between Notre Dame's defenders and Meier ran onto it, chipping a shot over onrushing goalkeeper Elyse Hight.
The Irish equalized in the 59th minute off of a corner kick. Brittany Von Rueden served the corner in and after Wake Forest failed to clear the ball, Cari Roccaro hit a shot that found its way through the defense.
Notre Dame went in front in the 70th minute. Crystal Thomas beat Bledsoe to a ball into the box and was able to finish past her, giving the Fighting Irish a 2-1 lead.
