"We are excited about the challenge that the qualifying tournament presents for us at this point in time," said U.S. head coach Steve Swanson. "We have prepared extremely hard these past two camps in order to be ready for what we know will be a strong field and a difficult environment in Panama."
Stengel, a forward, has been a fixture with the U-20 team as it has prepared for World Cup Qualifying over the past year, and was a member of the squad that recently swept the Four Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain. The Yanks defeated Switzerland 10-0, Germany 1-0 and Norway 2-0 to take the tournament title. Stengel started against Switzerland and Germany, contributing two assists in the rout of the Swiss.
A native of Melbourne, Fla., the reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Year and two-time All America selection has already established herself as one of the most accomplished players ever to take the field for Wake Forest. She scored a school-record 19 goals and 46 points in 2011 to help lead the Demon Deacons to their first-ever NCAA College Cup and already sits in second place on the school career goal-scoring charts.
