WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest football team wrapped up its fifth spring practice on Thursday, March 22 at the Doc Martin Football Complex.
On a beautiful spring afternoon, the Demon Deacons took advantage of the weather and got through a full two hour practice. Focusing mainly on positional drills, the team wrapped up practice with some red zone and full team plays.
"We actually had some installation scheduled for today that we didn't put in, just so we could continue to work on fundamentals," said head coach Jim Grobe. "It's just competition. We're trying as hard as we can to look at as many players as possible. When we get out of spring ball we want all our players to feel like the coaches have done a good job of evaluating everyone and knowing where they belong on the depth chart."
Grobe said the team spirit and physicality has impressed him the most so far, although the staff is intentionally taking things slow this spring to focus on fundamentals and evaluation.
"I just like our competition, we were pretty physical today and we've got a good spirit on this team," said Grobe. "The offensive guys like the defensive guys and vice versa and we compete pretty hard, but you can tell they're having fun. It gets a little heated at times, but they're always laughing when they come off the field together. There's just a good feel about this football team - felt that way about last year's team - but this is a close football team, these guys really like each other and compete really hard, but they do it the right way."
Next up for the Demon Deacons will be a public scrimmage on Saturday, March 24 at BB&T Field. The intrasquad scrimmage is set for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at BB&T Field. Admission is free of charge.
