WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest football team wrapped up its sixth spring practice on Tuesday, March 27 at the Doc Martin Football Complex.
It was a crisp, but warm and sunny afternoon as the Demon Deacons paced through a full two hour workout with minimal contact. Focusing mainly on positional drills, the team wrapped up practice with some offensive team plays and some extensive work on the throwing game.
Head coach Jim Grobe liked what he saw in Saturday's initial spring scrimmage, but is still taking things slowly with the defense as the coaching staff continues to evaluate.
"The big thing we want defensively, more than anything else, is to get off blocks and make plays," said Grobe. "I told the defensive staff, I'm not concerned about doing a lot of blitzing and running zero coverage and trying to roll the dice and gamble in the spring to stop the offense - [I don't want to] stop them by scheme and not because we're sound fundamentally. We're really more concerned right now about developing our players and finding out which guys can go make plays without having the scheme make the play for them."
After a sluggish start, the Deacs showed some good life offensively in Saturday's scrimmage and Grobe said he feels pretty good about the scheme installations his staff is making to this point.
"Offensively, I think we've got a really good plan in already," said Grobe. "If we didn't add another thing in, I think we'd be fine. We've got good throws, we've got a good misdirection right now in our running game and a lot of sets in right now."
Next up for the Demon Deacons will be another practice session on Thursday, March 29 at the Doc Martin Football Complex. Practice will be open to the public and is scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m.
