WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Fresh off a full weekend off for Easter, the Wake Forest football team was back on the turf at the Doc Martin Football Complex for its next-to-last practice of the spring on Tuesday, April 10.
With the annual Spring Game rapidly approaching, head coach Jim Grobe led a rested squad through a full two hours on a blustery, but beautiful afternoon. Grobe said the Demon Deacons have installed all they're going to and the staff is just continuing to refine, while continuing to evaluate and rotate players in bunches.
"We're really just rehashing things that we've already done," said Grobe. "Our biggest problem is consistency and we're letting everybody have opportunities so it's hard to be consistent. But we don't have anything else to put in, we just need to get better fundamentally. Really our big push right now is to keep doing the same things, but do them better."
The Deacs will host the annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 14 at BB&T Field. Admission will be free and open to the public. In a twist from the squad's previous two spring scrimmages, Wake Forest will split squads and play an actual game.
"Well, we haven't done this in a long time - we always did it at Air Force when I was there because we had a lot of numbers and here our numbers are down - but we're going to try to let the seniors divide in half and pick teams and actually try to play a game," said Grobe. "We won't have real long quarters, but I think it could be fun for our guys to try to play a little bit, see if we can't keep score and have a winner. I think it'll be a little bit more fun for the players and I think the fans will enjoy it more than just going out and doing a scrimmage again."
The team will be back on the practice fields on Thursday, April 12 for its customary 4:45 p.m. start.
