LANDOVER, Md. - Wake Forest soccer alumnus Michael Parkhurst made his 12th career appearance for the U.S. Men's National Team Wednesday, coming off the bench to play the final 17 minutes for the Americans in a 4-1 loss to five-time world champion Brazil in a friendly match at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.
Parkhurst came on in the 73rd minute at right back as a replacement for starter Steve Cherundolo. He was at times tasked with defending Brazilian star Neymar.
The U.S. fell behind 2-0 early by virtue of a penalty by Neymar and a corner kick goal by Thiago Silva before Herculez Gomez pulled a goal back for the Americans just before halftime. But Marcelo made the Brazil lead 3-1 in the 52nd minute, and Alexandre Pato tacked on another goal in the 87th minute to put the game away.
The Yanks will travel to play a friendly against Canada in Toronto on Sunday before kicking off qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup with a match against Antigua and Barbuda in Tampa, Fla. on June 8.
