Stengel Headed to Japan with U.S. U-20 Team

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest junior forward Katie Stengel departed yesterday for Japan with the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Soccer Team where the squad will play two friendly matches against the Japanese in preparation for August's 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup, which will also be held in the country.
The exhibition matches against Japan will take place on June 17 at the Nagai Stadium and June 20 at the J-Green Sakai National Training Center. Both venues are located in the Osaka area.
The Americans also recently found out their group-stage opponents for the 16-team World Cup. The U.S. will open the competition against Ghana on August 20 in Hiroshima, before playing China on August 23 in Hiroshima and defending champion Germany on August 27 in Rifo. The top two finishers from the four-team group will advance to the knockout stage.
Stengel has been a prominent member of the U-20 team in the current World Cup cycle, totaling three goals and three assists at the CONCACAF Championship in March to help lead the U.S. to a first-place finish and World Cup berth. A first-team All-America and the 2011 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, Stengel led all ACC players with 19 goals and 46 points last season - both school records.
