MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - The No. 3 Wake Forest women's soccer team got an early goal from Marisa Park and put forth a strong defensive effort to shutout College of Charleston 3-0 in an exhibition match on a rainy night at Patriots Point Saturday.

The match consisted of three 30-minute periods and the Demon Deacons netted two of their goals in the first frame to take a stranglehold on the match before tacking on an insurance goal with five minutes remaining. The Cougars mustered only three shots all game, none of them on target.

"Preseason has been a long week, so it was really exciting to get the group together and get out of here with a 3-0 win," said Park. "We're really excited about where we're headed. I think we're going to have a great week of practice, and we can't wait for the next game."

Park struck early in the 11th minute, rocketing a shot past the keeper after collecting a through ball from Kristen Meier. McSally doubled the advantage in the 27th minute, with a rocket from 18 yards, set up by Annick McBryar following a corner kick. In her first time taking the field for Wake Forest, freshman Taylor Waters made her mark, heading in a Jackie Logue cross in the 85th minute for the Deacons' third score.

Wake Forest outshot College of Charleston 18-3 and put eight shots on goal. The Deacons earned 10 corner kicks, compared to none for the Cougars.

All available players played for the Demon Deacons, including freshmen Waters, Jenai Davidson, Katie Dry and Sara Small who all got their first taste of collegiate action.

Small and starting goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe combined for a shutout without having to make a save.

Rachel Nuzzolese came close to doubling the lead three minutes later when she found an opening in the box, but her shot whistled just wide of the right post.

McSally tacked on a second goal just before the end of the opening 30-minute frame. Annick McBryar helped clean up the mess from a corner kick by dropping a ball back to McSally, who buried a shot into the top-right corner from 18 yards.

Nuzzolese threatened again in the 49th minute, blasting a free kick from 23 yards low past the wall, but goalkeeper Taylor Avery parried the shot and Logue pushed the rebound just wide to the right.

Waters closed the scoring in the 85th minute, getting on the end of a pinpoint cross by Logue and heading it past the goalkeeper.

Wake Forest will open regular season play on August 17 against Richmond as part of the Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational at Blacksburg, Va.
