HICKORY, N.C. - Wake Forest rising-senior Charlie Harrison teed-it-up with the pros on Monday and beat them all. Harrison shot a 7-under 64 at the Carolina Mountain Pro Tour event at the Rock Barn Golf Club on Monday and won the event.
Harrison went out in 2-under 33 on the Jackson Course at Rock Barn, but came home with a sizzling 5-under 31. His round included six birdies, an eagle and just one bogey. The victory was his first of the summer.
"I haven't had a slam-dunk summer or anything but I've been pretty consistent," Harrison said. "I think my highest round has been a 74 and I put together a couple of good rounds here and there. Since I didn't qualify for the U.S. Amateur, I had a couple of weeks off before I went back to school so I decided to find an event to play. I hit the ball pretty well today and this is a good confidence boost heading into the season.
Harrison outlasted his playing partner Jordan Powell, who shot a 5-under 66. Powell shot a 1-over 36 on the opening nine but couldn't close the gap on Harrison despite coming home in 6-under 30. Powell was seventh on the Tour's money list coming into the day.
Harrison and the rest of the Deacons will open the season on Sept. 7 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic at the Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.
